Description

The Black Widow Frontosa (Cyphotilapia frontosa variant) is a rare and striking color morph of the classic Frontosa Cichlid, a deep-water species native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Unlike the standard Frontosa, which features blue and white stripes, the Black Widow variant exhibits a dramatic black and silver-gray pattern, making it a highly sought-after addition for cichlid enthusiasts.
In the wild, Frontosas inhabit deep rocky zones, where they form loose groups and ambush smaller fish and crustaceans. They are slow-growing but long-lived, making them a rewarding species for experienced aquarists.
In aquariums, the Black Widow Frontosa thrives in a large tank with plenty of caves, rocks, and open swimming areas to mimic its natural habitat. It is a generally peaceful cichlid, but due to its size and predatory nature, it is best kept with other large African cichlids or similarly sized tankmates. They do well in groups and should ideally be kept in a small colony with one dominant male and multiple females.
Growing to about 35 cm (14 inches), the Black Widow Frontosa requires a large, well-filtered aquarium to accommodate its size and territorial behavior. Its elegant appearance, slow and graceful swimming style, and unique coloration make it a standout species for aquarists looking for a showpiece cichlid in their Tanganyikan setup.
