Description
The Red Snakeskin Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus hybrid) is a stunning and elegant freshwater fish known for its dense, maze-like red patterning over a lighter base color, resembling the intricate scales of a snakeskin. This selectively bred variety is a favorite among aquarists for its vivid color contrast, graceful swimming style, and peaceful demeanor.
Habitat and Behavior
Though the Red Snakeskin is a domesticated strain, all Discus originate from the soft, warm, and slow-moving blackwater tributaries of the Amazon Basin. Like all Discus, they are gentle, social fish that prefer to live in groups of five or more, where they develop a natural pecking order and interact frequently.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Red Snakeskin Discus thrives in a calm, well-planted setup with soft substrate, low to moderate lighting, and gentle filtration. They prefer slightly acidic, very clean, and warm water with minimal fluctuations. Frequent water changes and consistent parameters are key to keeping this sensitive species healthy. They do well with other Discus and peaceful tankmates such as cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras, and Corydoras.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches), the Red Snakeskin Discus is ideal for medium to large aquariums. Its intricate red pattern, calm presence, and social behavior make it a true showpiece for any Discus enthusiast.
