Description

The Myers’ Hillstream Loach (Pseudogastromyzon myersi) is a fascinating freshwater species native to the fast-flowing rivers and mountain streams of China and Vietnam. Known for its flattened body and intricate patterning, this loach is specially adapted to cling to rocks and resist strong currents, making it an excellent choice for river-style aquariums.

In the wild, Myers’ Hillstream Loaches inhabit cool, oxygen-rich waters with rocky substrates, where they graze on biofilm, algae, and small invertebrates. Their streamlined bodies and specialized fins allow them to navigate high-flow environments with ease.
In aquariums, the Myers’ Hillstream Loach thrives in a well-oxygenated tank with strong water flow, smooth rocks, and plenty of surfaces for grazing. A soft substrate and hiding spots created with driftwood and stones help replicate their natural habitat. They are peaceful and social fish that do best in small groups and can be housed with other hillstream species or active tankmates such as danios, rasboras, and small barbs.
Growing to about 6–7 cm (2.5–3 inches), the Myers’ Hillstream Loach is well-suited for medium-sized aquariums with high-flow filtration. Its unique body shape, active grazing behavior, and ability to thrive in river-style setups make it a captivating and beneficial addition to aquariums designed for specialized bottom-dwelling fish.
