Description
The Red-Bellied Pacu (Piaractus brachypomus) is a large, robust freshwater fish native to the rivers, floodplains, and tributaries of the Amazon and Orinoco Basins in South America. Often mistaken for its close relative, the piranha, due to its similar body shape and red belly, the Red-Bellied Pacu is a peaceful, herbivorous species known for its strong jaw and powerful, rounded body.In the wild, Red-Bellied Pacus inhabit slow-moving rivers and flooded forest areas, where they feed primarily on fruits, nuts, seeds, and plant matter that fall into the water from overhanging vegetation. Their strong teeth, which resemble human molars, are specially adapted for crushing hard-shelled plant material. In aquariums, the Red-Bellied Pacu requires an exceptionally large tank due to its potential size and active swimming habits. A spacious setup with strong filtration, open swimming areas, and driftwood or large rocks for structure is ideal. While generally peaceful, they should be housed with other large, non-aggressive species due to their size and strength. Their diet in captivity should include a variety of vegetables, fruits, and plant-based foods to mimic their natural feeding habits.Capable of growing up to 60-90 cm (24-35 inches) in captivity, the Red-Bellied Pacu is best suited for public aquariums or very large home setups. Its impressive size, strong personality, and unique feeding behavior make it a fascinating species for experienced aquarists who can provide the space and care it requires.
