Description

The Black Shark (Labeo chrysophekadion), also known as the Black Sharkminnow or Black Labeo, is a large and striking freshwater species native to the rivers, lakes, and reservoirs of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Its jet-black body and robust, torpedo-shaped form give it an imposing and elegant appearance, making it a standout addition to spacious aquariums. In the wild, the Black Shark inhabits fast-flowing waters with rocky or sandy substrates, feeding on algae, plant matter, and small invertebrates. It is an omnivorous species that plays an important role in maintaining the ecosystem by grazing on algae and organic debris. In aquariums, the Black Shark requires a very large tank with ample swimming space and sturdy decor such as rocks, driftwood, and caves for hiding. This species is highly territorial, especially as it matures, and is best kept alone or with similarly robust, fast-swimming tankmates in very large setups. Due to its size and aggressive tendencies, it is not recommended for community tanks.Capable of growing up to 60 cm (24 inches) in the right conditions, the Black Shark is a challenging but rewarding species for experienced aquarists with the space and resources to accommodate its needs. Its bold presence, striking appearance, and active behavior make it an impressive centerpiece for large, well-maintained aquariums.
