Description

The Texas Cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) is a bold and striking freshwater species native to the rivers and lakes of southern Texas and northern Mexico. It is the only cichlid species naturally found in the United States and is known for its impressive size, strong personality, and stunning iridescent blue-green markings against a pearly white or grayish body.

In the wild, Texas Cichlids inhabit slow-moving rivers, lakes, and reservoirs with rocky or sandy substrates, where they feed on small fish, invertebrates, and plant matter. They are territorial and highly adaptable, often thriving in a range of water conditions.
In aquariums, the Texas Cichlid thrives in a spacious tank with rocks, driftwood, and caves to establish territories. Due to their aggressive and territorial nature, they should only be kept with similarly sized, robust tankmates such as other large cichlids, large catfish, or similar semi-aggressive species. Providing plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers can help reduce aggression.
Growing up to 30 cm (12 inches), the Texas Cichlid requires a large aquarium with excellent filtration and stable water conditions. Its vibrant coloration, bold personality, and active nature make it a captivating choice for experienced aquarists who can manage its territorial behavior and provide the space it needs to thrive.
