Description

The Tire Track Eel (Mastacembelus armatus) is a large and fascinating spiny eel species native to the slow-moving rivers, streams, and floodplains of South and Southeast Asia. Its name comes from the intricate, tire track-like patterns on its elongated body, which help it blend seamlessly into its natural habitat.

This nocturnal fish spends much of its time burrowed in soft substrates or hiding among roots, rocks, and driftwood. It is an opportunistic carnivore, feeding on small fish, insects, worms, and other invertebrates. In the wild, it thrives in environments with a mix of sandy bottoms and dense vegetation.

In aquariums, the Tire Track Eel requires a spacious tank with a soft substrate, plenty of hiding places, and a secure lid, as it is an adept escape artist. While generally peaceful, it may prey on smaller tankmates, so it is best housed with similarly sized or larger, non-aggressive species. This eel’s striking appearance and intriguing behavior make it a favorite among advanced aquarists.
